Facebook Cover Photos: What You Need to Know

by Tom Stables

When Facebook first rolled out the Timeline to businesses, the rules on what you could and couldn’t put on your cover photo were strict and quite prohibitive (no price or purchase information, contact details or calls to action). Well, they’re relaxed the rules a little.

What they say now, is that your cover photo “can’t be deceptive, misleading, infringe on anyone else’s copyright or be in violation of the Pages Terms. You may not encourage people to upload your cover photo to their personal timelines.” Note, that the instruction here is that you are not to encourage users to upload your cover photo and not that they can’t. If your cover image is appealing enough, hopefully the user may not need any encouragement at all!

So what can you do with your Facebook cover photo? Well, it can include price, purchase or contact information as long as they don’t have more than 20% text. For more information on determining this 20%, Facebook have developed these guidelines.

So get thinking about how you can best represent your business. Could it be your product in use with the logo in view  Perhaps it could be your premises. the best way to determine what works is to see your audience’s reaction and interactions as you try new cover photos.
